6 THE FORCES OF EVIL (cont'd)

When I was daily with you in the temple, ye stretched not forth your hands against me: but this is your hour, and the power of darkness.                                                                                                                                                                               l2253/k1449

When therefore ye see the abomination of desolation, which was spoken of by Daniel the prophet, standing in the holy place (let him that readeth understand), then let them that are in Judaea flee unto the mountains: ....                                                    m2415-6/k1314

And many false prophets shall arise, and shall lead many astray. And because iniquity shall be multiplied, the love of the many shall wax cold.                                                                                                                                                                                              m2411-2

Did not I choose you the twelve, and one of you is a devil?                                                                                                              j0670

While I was with them, I kept them in thy name which thou hast given me: and I guarded them, and not one of them perished, but the son of perdition; that the scripture might be fulfilled. But now I come to thee; and these things I speak in the world, that they may have my joy fulfilled in themselves. I have given them thy word; and the world hated them, because they are not of the world, even as I am not of the world. I pray not that thou shouldest take them from the world, but that thou shouldest keep them from the evil one.          j1712-5

He that is a hireling, and not a shepherd, whose own the sheep are not, beholdeth the wolf coming, and leaveth the sheep, and fleeth, and the wolf snatcheth them, and scattereth them: he fleeth because he is a hireling, and careth not for the sheep.                    j1012-3

Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly are ravening wolves. By their fruits ye shall know them. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles? Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but the corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit. A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit. Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire. Therefore by their fruits ye shall know them.                                                  m0715-20/l0643-4
The good man out of the good treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is good; and the evil man out of the evil treasure bringeth forth that which is evil: for out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaketh.                                                                            l0645

[To the Disciples:] Take heed that no man lead you astray. For many shall come in my name, saying, I am the Christ; and shall lead many astray.                                                                                                                                                                     m2404-5/k1305/l2108

[To the Disciples:] Take heed, beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and the leaven of Herod.                              k0815/m1606/l1201

[To those Jews which had believed on him:] Ye do the works of your father.
[We were not born of fornication; we have one Father, even God.]
If God were your Father, ye would love me: for I came forth and am come from God; for neither have I come of myself, but he sent me. Why do ye not understand my speech? Even because ye cannot hear my word. Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father it is your will to do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and stood not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father thereof.                                                                               j0841-4

[To the multitude:] Hear me all of you, and understand: there is nothing from without the man, that going into him can defile him: but the things which proceed out of the man are those that defile the man.
[When the disciples asked for an explanation:] Are ye so without understanding also? Perceive ye not, that whatsoever from without goeth into the man, it cannot defile him; because it goeth not into his heart, but into his belly, and goeth out into the draught?
That which proceedeth out of the man, that defileth the man. For from within, out of the heart of men, evil thoughts proceed, fornications, thefts, murders, adulteries, covetings, wickednesses, deceit, lasciviousness, an evil eye, railing, pride, foolishness: all these evil things proceed from within, and defile the man.                                                                                                   k0714-23/m1510-20

[To the multitudes:] If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts ....                                                                            m0711/l1113
