14 Dialogues with Individuals (cont'd)
What communications are these
that ye have one with another, as ye walk?
[Cleopas:
Dost thou alone sojourn in Jerusalem and not know the things which are come
to pass there in these days?]
What things?
[Cleopas and his companion: The things concerning Jesus of Nazareth, which
was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people: and how
the chief priests and our rulers delivered him up to be condemned to death,
and crucified him. But we hoped that it was he which should redeem Israel.
Yea and beside all this, it is now the third day since these things came to
pass. Moreover certain women of our company amazed us, having been early at
the tomb; and when they found not his body, they came, saying, that they had
also seen a vision of angels, which said that he was alive. And certain of
them that were with us went to the tomb, and found it even so as the women
had said: but him they saw not.]
O foolish men, and slow of heart to believe in all that the prophets have
spoken! Behoved it not the Christ to suffer these things, and to enter into
his glory?
[And beginning from Moses and from all the prophets, he interpreted to them
in all the scriptures the things concerning himself. And they drew nigh unto
the village, whither they were going: and he made as though he would go
further. And they constrained him,]
[Abide with us: for it is toward evening, and the day is now far spent.]
[And he went in to abide with them. And it came to pass, when he had sat
down with them to meat, he took the bread, and blessed it, and brake, and
gave to them. And their eyes were opened, and they knew him; and he vanished
out of their sight. And they said one to another,]
[Was not our heart burning within us, while he spake to us in the way, while
he opened to us the scriptures?]

[Martha: Lord, dost thou not care that my sister did leave me to
serve alone? bid her therefore that she help me.]
Martha, Martha, thou art anxious and troubled about many things: but one
thing is needful: for Mary hath chosen the good part, which shall not be
taken away from her.

[Martha & Mary sent unto him, saying, Lord, behold, he whom thou
lovest is sick.]
This sickness is not unto death, but for the glory of God, that the Son of
God may be glorified thereby.
[Now Jesus loved Martha, and her sister, and Lazarus. When therefore he
heard that he was sick, he abode at that time two days at the place where he
was. Then after this he saith to his disciples,] Let us go into Judaea
again.
[The disciples: Rabbi, the Jews were but now seeking to stone thee; and
goest thou thither again?]
Are there not twelve hours in the day? If a man walk in the day, he
stumbleth not, because he seeth the light of this world. But if a man walk
in the night, he stumbleth, because the light is not in him.
Our friend Lazarus is fallen asleep; but I go, that I may awake him out of
sleep.
[The disciples: Lord, if he is fallen asleep, he will recover.]
Lazarus is dead. And I am glad for your sakes that I was not there, to the
intent ye may believe; nevertheless let us go unto him.
[Thomas: Let us also go, that we may die with him.]
[Martha: Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died. And even
now I know that, whatsoever thou shalt ask of God, God will give thee.] Thy
brother shall rise again.
[Martha: I know that he shall rise again in the resurrection at the last
day.]
I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth on me, though he die,
yet shall he live: and whosoever liveth and believeth on me shall never die.
Believest thou this?
[Yea, Lord: I have believed that thou art the Christ, the Son of God, even
he that cometh into the world.]
[Martha to Mary: The Master is here, and calleth thee.]
[Mary: Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died.]
Where have ye laid him?
[Lord, come and see.]
[Jesus wept. The Jews therefore said, Behold how he loved him!]
[But some of them said, Could not this man, which opened the eyes of him
that was blind, have caused that this man also should not die?]
Take ye away the stone.
[Martha: Lord, by this time he stinketh: for he has been dead four days.]
Said I not unto thee, that, if thou believedst, thou shouldest see the glory
of God?
Father, I thank thee that thou heardest me. And I knew that thou hearest me
always: but because of the multitude which standeth around I said it, that
they may believe that thou didst send me.
Lazarus, come forth.
Loose him, and let him go.
