 15 JUDGMENT & SALVATION (cont'd)

The Law

Think not that I came to destroy the law or the prophets: I came not to destroy, but to fulfil. For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass away, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass away from the law, till all things be accomplished. Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven: but whosoever shall do and teach them, he shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.                                                                             m0517-9/l1617

.... if thou wouldest enter into life, keep the commandments.
[The young man: Which?]
Thou shalt not kill, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness, Honour thy father and thy mother: and, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.
[All these things have I observed: what lack I yet?]
If thou wouldest be perfect, go, sell that thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come, follow me.

                                                                                                                                                                     m1917-21/k1019-21/l1820-2

[The Pharisees and the scribes: Why walk not thy disciples according to the tradition of the elders, but eat their bread with defiled hands?]
Well did Isaiah prophesy of you hypocrites, as it is written,
This people honoureth me with their lips,
But their heart is far from me.
But in vain do they worship me,
Teaching as their doctrines the precepts of men.
Ye leave the commandment of God, and hold fast the tradition of men.
Full well do ye reject the commandment of God, that ye may keep your tradition.                                                          k0705-9/m1502-9

But Abraham saith, They have Moses and the prophets; let them hear them. And he said, Nay, father Abraham: but if one go to them from the dead, they will repent. And he said unto him, If they hear not Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded, if one rise from the dead.                                                                                                                                                                               l1629-31

The scribes and the Pharisees sit on Moses' seat: all things therefore whatsoever they bid you, these do and observe: but do not ye after their works; for they say, and do not.                                                                                                                                    m2302-3

Moses for your hardness of heart suffered you to put away your wives: but from the beginning it hath not been so.                       m1908

[The Pharisees: Master, this woman hath been taken in adultery, in the very act. Now in the law Moses commanded us to stone such: what then sayest thou of her?]
He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her.                                                                                                   j0804-7

Did not Moses give you the law, and yet none of you doeth the law?                                                                                               j0719

[Master, which is the great commandment in the law?]
Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the great and first commandment. And a second like unto it is this, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. On these two commandments hangeth the whole law, and the prophets.                                                                                                                                                                                     m2236-40

The New Law
Ye have heard that it was said to them of old time, Thou shalt not kill; and whosoever shall kill shall be in danger of the judgement: but I say unto you, that every one who is angry with his brother shall be in danger of the judgement; and whosoever shall say to his brother, Raca, shall be in danger of the council; and whosoever shall say, Thou fool, shall be in danger of the hell of fire.                      m0521-2

Ye have heard that it was said, Thou shalt not commit adultery: but I say unto you, that every one that looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart.                                                                                                             m0527-8

Again, you have heard it said to them of old time, Thou shalt not foreswear thyself, but shall perform unto the Lord thine oaths: but I say unto you, Swear not at all; neither by the heaven, for it is the throne of God; nor by the earth, for it is the footstool of his feet; nor by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great King. Neither shalt thou swear by thy head, for thou canst not make one hair white or black. But let your speech be, Yea, yea; Nay, nay: and whatsoever is more than these is of the evil one.                                                    m0533-7
