(There are links to all parables on Pages 229 & 230)
[The disciples of John: Why do we and the Pharisees fast oft,
but they disciples fast not?]
Can the sons of the bride-chamber mourn, as long as the bridegroom is with
them? but the days will come, when the bridegroom shall be taken away from
them, and then will they fast. And no man putteth a piece of undressed cloth
upon an old garment; for that which should fill it up taketh from the garment,
and a worse rent is made. Neither do men put new wine into old
wine-skins: else the skins burst, and the wine is spilled, and the skins
perish: but they put new wine into fresh wine-skins, and both are preserved.

The Sower
Hearken: Behold, the sower went forth to sow: and it came to pass, as he
sowed, some seed fell by the way side, and the birds came and devoured it. And
other fell on the rocky ground, where it had not much earth; and straightway
it sprang up, because it had no deepness of earth: and when the sun was risen,
it was scorched; and because it had no root, it withered away. And other fell
among the thorns, and the thorns grew up, and choked it, and it yielded no
fruit. And others fell into the good ground, and yielded fruit, growing up and
increasing; and brought forth, thirtyfold, and sixtyfold, and a hundredfold.
Who hath ears to hear, let him hear.
Unto you is given the mystery of the kingdom of God: but unto them that are
without, all things are done in parables: that seeing they may see, and not
perceive; and hearing they may hear, and not understand; lest haply they
should turn again, and it should be forgiven them.
Know ye not this parable? and how shall ye know all the parables? The sower
soweth the word. And these are they by the way side, where the word is sown;
and when they have heard, straightway cometh Satan, and taketh away the word
which hath been sown in them. And these in like manner are they that are sown
upon the rocky places, who, when they have heard the word, straightway receive
it with joy; and they have no root in themselves, but endure for a while;
then, when tribulation or persecution ariseth because of the word, straightway
they stumble. And others are they that are sown among the thorns; these are
they that have heard the word, and the cares of the world, and the
deceitfulness of riches, and the lusts of other things entering in, choke the
word, and it becometh unfruitful. And those are they that were sown upon the
good ground; such as hear the word, and accept it, and bear fruit, thirtyfold,
and sixtyfold, and a hundredfold.

The Labourers in the Vineyard
For the kingdom of heaven is like unto a man that is a householder, which went
out early in the morning to hire labourers into his vineyard. And when he had
agreed with the labourers for a penny a day, he sent them into his vineyard.
And he went out about the third hour, and saw others standing in the
marketplace idle; and to them he said, Go ye also into the vineyard, and
whatsoever is right I will give you. And they went their way. Again he went
out about the sixth and the ninth hour, and did likewise. And about the
eleventh hour he went out, and found others standing; and he saith unto them,
Why stand ye here all the day idle? They say unto him, Because no man hath
hired us. He saith unto them, Go ye also into the vineyard. And when even was
come, the lord of the vineyard saith unto his steward, Call the labourers, and
pay them their hire, beginning from the last unto the first. And when they
came that were hired about the eleventh hour, they received every man a penny.
And when the first came, they supposed that they would receive more; and they
likewise received every man a penny. And when they received it, they murmured
against the householder, saying, These last have spent but one hour, and thou
hast made them equal unto us, which have borne the burden of the day and the
scorching heat. But he answered and said to one of them, Friend, I do thee no
wrong: didst not thou agree with me for a penny? Take up that which is thine,
and go thy way; it is my will to give unto this last, even as unto thee. Is it
not lawful for me to do what I will with mine own? or is thine eye evil,
because I am good? So the last shall be first, and the first last.
