13 VOCATION (cont'd)
[Lord, suffer me first to go and bury my father.]
Leave the dead to bury their own dead; but go thou and publish abroad the
kingdom of God.
[Another: I will follow thee, Lord; but first suffer me to bid farewell to
them that are at my house.]
No man, having put his hand to the plough, and looking back, is fit for the
kingdom of God.

Martha, Martha, thou art anxious and troubled about many things: but one thing
is needful: for Mary hath chosen the good part, which shall not be taken away
from her.
l1041-2
A certain man made a great supper; and he bade many: and he sent forth his
servant at supper time to say to them that were bidden, Come; for all things
are now ready. And they all with one consent began to make excuse. The first
said unto him, I have bought a field, and I must needs go out and see it: I
pray thee have me excused. And another said, I have bought five yoke of oxen,
and I go to prove them: I pray thee have me excused. And another said, I have
married a wife, and therefore I cannot come. And the servant came, and told
his lord these things. Then the master of the house being angry said to his
servant, Go out quickly into the streets and lanes of the city, and bring in
hither the poor and maimed and blind and lame. And the servant said, Lord,
what thou didst command is done, and yet there is room. And the lord said unto
the servant, Go out into the highways and hedges, and constrain them to come
in, that my house may be filled. For I say unto you, that none of those men
which were bidden shall taste of my supper.

The sower went forth to sow his seed: and as he sowed, some fell by the way
side; and it was trodden under foot, and the birds of the heaven devoured it.
And other fell on the rock; and as soon as it grew, it withered away, because
it had no moisture. And other fell amidst the thorns; and the thorns grew with
it, and choked it. And other fell into the good ground, and grew, and brought
forth fruit a hundredfold.
He that hath ears to hear, let him hear.
[His disciples asked him what this parable might be.]
Unto you it is given to know the mysteries of the kingdom of God: but to the
rest in parables; that seeing they may not see, and hearing they may not
understand. Now the parable is this: The seed is the word of God. And those by
the way side are they that have heard; then cometh the devil, and taketh away
the word from their heart, that they may not believe and be saved. And those
on the rock are they which, when they have heard, receive the word with joy;
and these have no root, which for a while believe, and in time of temptation
fall away. And that which fell among the thorns, these are they that have
heard, and as they go on their way they are choked with cares and riches and
pleasures of this life, and bring no fruit to perfection. And that in the good
ground, these are such as in an honest and good heart, having heard the word,
hold it fast, and bring forth fruit with patience.

And if thy hand or thy foot causeth thee to stumble, cut it off, and cast it
from thee: it is good for thee to enter into life maimed or halt, rather than
having two hands or two feet to be cast into the eternal fire. And if thine
eye causeth thee to stumble, pluck it out, and cast it from thee: it is good
for thee to enter into life with one eye, rather than having two eyes to be
cast into the hell of fire. m1808-9/k0943-7
If thou wouldest be perfect, go, sell that thou hast, and give to the poor,
and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come, follow me.
m1921/l1822/k1021
It is hard for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of heaven. m1923/k1023/l1824
Simon, Simon, behold, Satan has asked to have you, that he might sift you as
wheat: but I made supplication for thee, that thy faith fail not: and do thou,
when once thou hast turned again, stablish thy brethren. l2231-2
I pray not that thou shouldest take them from the world, but that thou
shouldest keep them from the evil one.

Take heed that ye be not led astray: for many shall come in my name, saying, I
am he; and, The time is at hand: go ye not after them.
l2108/k1305/m2404-5
But take heed of yourselves, lest haply your hearts be overcharged with
surfeiting, and drunkenness, and cares of this life, and that day come on you
suddenly as a snare: for so shall it come upon all them that dwell on the face
of all the earth. But watch ye at every season, making supplication, that ye
may prevail to escape all these things that shall come to pass, and to stand
before the Son of man.
l2134-6
No servant can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love
the other; or else he will hold to one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve
God and mammon. l1613/m0624
