Personal Vocations
[To Andrew and another of John the Baptist's disciples:] What seek ye?
[Rabbi (which is to say, being interpreted, Master), where abidest thou?]
Come, and ye shall see.
[They came therefore and saw where he abode; and they abode with him that day: it was about the tenth hour. One of the two that heard John speak, and followed him, was Andrew, Simon Peter's brother.]
[Andrew to Peter: We have found the Messiah (which is, being interpreted, Christ).]
[He brought him unto Jesus.]
Thou art Simon the son of John: thou shalt be called Cephas (which is by interpretation, Peter).                                                 j0138-42

[To Philip next day:] Follow me.
[Philip to Nathanael: We have found him, of whom Moss in the law, and the prophets, did write, Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.]
[Nathanael: Can any good thing come out of Nazareth?]
[Philip: Come and see.]
Behold, an Israelite indeed, in whom is no guile!
[Nathanael: Whence knowest thou me?]
Before Philip called thee, when thou wast under the fig tree, I saw thee.
[Nathanael: Rabbi, thou art the Son of God; thou art King of Israel.]
Because I said unto thee, I saw thee underneath the fig tree, believest thou? thou shalt see greater things than these.
Verily, verily, I say unto you, Ye shall see the heaven opened, and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of man.

                                                                                                                                                                                                     j0143-51

[To Peter:] Put out into the deep, and let down your nets for a draught.
[Peter: Master, we toiled all night, and took nothing: but at thy word I will let down the nets.]
[And when they had this done, they inclosed a great multitude of fishes; and their nets were breaking; and they beckoned unto their partners in the other boat, that they should come and help them. And they came, and filled both the boats, so that they began to sink.]
[Peter said, Depart from me; for I am a sinful man, O Lord. For he was amazed, and all that were with him, at the draught of the fishes which they had taken; and so were also James and John, sons of Zebedee, which were partners with Simon.]
Fear not; from henceforth thou shalt catch men.
[And when they had brought their boats to land, they left all, and followed him.                                                    l0504-11/m0419/k0117

[To Matthew:] Follow me.                                                                                                                                           m0909/k0214/l0527

Follow me.
[Lord, suffer me first to go and bury my father.]
Leave the dead to bury their own dead; but go thou and publish abroad the kingdom of God.
[Another: I will follow thee, Lord; but first suffer me to bid farewell to them that are at my house.]
No man, having put his hand to the plough, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God.                                        l0959-62/m0821-2

[To the rich young man:] If thou wouldest be perfect, go, sell that thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come, follow me.                                                                                                                                   m1921/l1822/k1021

[To Peter after his confession of faith:] Blessed art thou, Simon Bar-Jonah: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven. And I also say unto thee, that thou art Peter, and upon this rock will I build my church; and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it. And I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.                                                 m1617-9

[Peter: Lord, dost thou wash my feet?]
What I do thou knowest not now; but thou shalt understand hereafter.
[Thou shalt never wash my feet.]
If I wash thee not, thou hast no part with me.
[Lord, not my feet only, but also my hands and my head.]
He that is bathed needeth not save to wash his feet, but is clean every whit: and ye are clean, but not all.                                j1306-10
